What Is a TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular joint connects your lower jaw to your skull. When this joint or the muscles controlling it are inflamed, displaced, or damaged, it causes a range of symptoms collectively known as TMJ disorder (TMD). Causes include teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw injury, arthritis, bite misalignment, or structural problems with the joint.
Common Symptoms of TMJ Disorder
- Jaw pain or soreness — especially in the morning
- Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when opening or closing
- Difficulty or discomfort while chewing
- Jaw locking — difficulty opening or closing the mouth fully
- Headaches or migraines around the temples
- Ear pain, ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Neck and shoulder pain associated with jaw tension
TMJ Treatment Options
- Occlusal splints (night guards) to reduce grinding and joint loading
